Do you have an exceptional employee in your university spin out who would like to do a PhD whilst still remaining in the company?
This opportunity is ideal for a spin out or biotech or indeed technology driven corporates, where you are developing a technology or innovative product and you have a bright researcher working on the research who would like to undertake a PhD whilst remaining in employment.

Awarded to exceptionally promising individuals who may be currently be working in a company or who may be a doctoral student wanting to enhance a project.

The 1851 Commission will pay for half the employee salary,  the university fees and provide annual travel costs up to £3.5k.
In addition, on successful completion, the University host department gets £10K

Typically, a Fellowship leads to a PhD/EngD

The basic formula is:
  • Company-employed: 50% salary (inc. NI/SA) up to £21K pa + university fees
  • EngD/CASE students:  Stipend enhancement (£2k pa) plus up to £15k pa funding to enhance project
  • In both cases, annual travel costs up to £3.5K
  • On successful completion, University host department gets £10K

In this way, Fellowships encourage collaborations between the sponsoring Company and the associated University.  The successful employee student benefits from being embedded in a very strong network which encourages links between industries and academia.

The closing date for the next round of the prestigious 1851 Research Fellowships is 18th February 2016.
