Home > IP Pragmatics opens new office in Edinburgh

IP Pragmatics, an IP and business development consulting firm, expands its operations in the UK with a new office in Edinburgh.

With 16 universities, Scotland has the largest concentration of universities in Europe, with at least four in the world’s top 200. According to Edinburgh Council's facts and figures booklet for 2015, 54% of Edinburgh's population is educated to degree level ranking it number one in Britain. Scotland also does more research per head of population than anywhere else in the UK making it one of the top locations for R&D. As a result, there is growing investment in several technology areas including life sciences, biotech, aerospace and renewables.

“The increasing innovation and investment in the country coupled with our existing network of Scottish clients and contacts, provides an exciting growth opportunity for IP Pragmatics” said CEO, Rupert Osborn.

The new office is located in Rutland Square in the city centre and opened in November. Amy Lam, the newly appointed Head of the Scottish Office, joined IP Pragmatics from Edinburgh BioQuarter where she and her team were responsible for facilitating commercial engagement with the pharma and biotech sector and supporting the commercialisation of technologies arising from the University of Edinburgh’s Medical School and NHS Lothian for the development of new drugs, diagnostic tools and medical devices. “Scotland has a long-held reputation for invention and innovation. Quality research from its many universities continues to drive the development of exciting technologies and the creation of new businesses underpinned by intellectual assets and intellectual property” said Amy. “Establishing a Scottish office for IP Pragmatics provides us with a great opportunity to help local companies and institutions with their technology commercialisation activities.”

Over the past 15 years, IP Pragmatics have worked on a large number of projects for Scottish companies and institutions including Scottish Enterprise, SDI, The James Hutton Institute and several Scottish Universities. They have also undertaken audits for SMEs under the Scottish Enterprise IP Audits Plus Programme.

"We are delighted to welcome IP Pragmatics to the rapidly growing life sciences cluster in Scotland” said Julia Brown, Sector Portfolio Director for Life and Chemical Sciences at Scottish Enterprise. “This is a further demonstration of Scotland’s international competitiveness, especially in the AgriTech and Animal Health sector."

Professor Colin Campbell, Chief Executive and Director of Science Excellence at the James Hutton Institute added that “with insight and effective engagement IP Pragmatics have helped enormously to link our scientific research with the AgriTech industry sector needs.”
