Knowledge Exchange and Commercilisation Fellow – Nuclear Physics: University of York
Department
The Department of Physics is at the forefront of pioneering global research and technological advancement in our world leading research centres, focused around biophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and plasma physics and fusion energy at the York Plasma Institute. As a Department we strive to provide a working environment which allows all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish, and to excel. We aim to ensure that there is a supportive and egalitarian culture at all levels and across all staff groups. We promote good practice and a strong culture of equality in higher education, and are proud of our Juno Champion Award and Athena SWAN Silver Award.
The Nuclear Physics group within the Department of Physics has recently grown to be the largest group in the UK and one of the most active in knowledge exchange and impact generation. We have a wide range of research interests including technologies from semiconductor to scintillator detectors, but also key unexploited methodologies such as quantum entanglement and nuclear polarization. Our research has impact in fields including homeland security, nuclear decommissioning and medical imaging.
Role
You will work in partnership with academic and professional services staff to accelerate the translation of research in the nuclear physics group into real world applications. Outcomes will include the formation of spin-out companies, intellectual property (IP) based commercial licence deals, commercial service provision, externally funded projects such as translational awards (which advance opportunities towards commercialisation), and on occasion, collaborative awards with industry such as those offered by Innovate UK.
With support from colleagues specialising in impact and research development, you will increase the group’s level of industrial engagement by identifying and building relationships with key industrial partners.
Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
You will be ideally be educated to a postgraduate level in Physics. In particular, candidates are welcomed with a background in nuclear/particle physics, nuclear science, or medical imaging field.
You will have an understanding of commercialisation processes and the development of ideas into products and services.
Ideally, you will have an understanding of radiation sensor technologies, their development and implementation.
You will be able to demonstrate experience of managing complex projects; building strong relationships with business support networks; effective client management and relationship building.
You will have outstanding verbal and written communication skills; be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders; and be able to formally present to business audiences at network meetings and events.
